In the event of a fire, every second counts. A fire alarm system (FAS) assumes a central protective function: it detects signs of fire at an early stage, alerts people in the building and – depending on the design – automatically informs the fire department. At the same time, other measures can be triggered to limit damage, such as closing fire doors, activating smoke vents or unlocking escape routes.
How does a fire alarm system work?
Different types of detectors are used in buildings, such as smoke, heat or flame detectors. If a detector registers smoke development or an unusual increase in temperature, a signal is sent to the central control unit. This evaluates the information, triggers the alarm if necessary and initiates the predefined measures. This ensures that people are warned in good time and valuable seconds are gained for evacuation and firefighting.
