Mold in the home is not only annoying, but can also affect health and damage the fabric of the building. One of the main causes of mold growth is incorrect ventilation. However, mold can be effectively prevented with a few simple measures. In this article, you will learn how to ventilate properly and thus create a healthy living environment.
Why does mold develop?
Mould occurs when moisture in rooms is not sufficiently removed. Every household releases a considerable amount of water into the air when cooking, showering, drying laundry or even when breathing. If this moisture cannot escape, it settles on cool surfaces such as windows, walls or in corners – ideal conditions for mold.
How to ventilate properly
- Shock ventilation instead of tilt ventilation:
Open the windows wide and ventilate for several minutes, preferably three to four times a day. Tilted windows are often not enough to completely exchange the humid air and can even cause the walls around the windows to cool down in winter and encourage mold. - Use cross ventilation:
If possible, create a draught by opening opposite windows or doors. This allows you to exchange the air in the shortest possible time. - Ventilate immediately after showering or cooking:
A lot of moisture is created in the kitchen and bathroom in particular. Ventilate immediately after cooking or showering to remove the damp air. Close the doors to adjacent rooms to prevent the moisture from spreading. - Heat rooms evenly:
Cold rooms tend to attract damp air from warmer rooms, which increases the risk of mold. You should therefore also keep rooms that are rarely used sufficiently warm.
Additional tips for preventing mold
- Place furniture at a distance from the wall: Make sure that furniture such as cupboards or sofas are at least 5 cm away from the wall. This allows the air to circulate better.
- Monitor humidity: You can keep an eye on the humidity with a hygrometer. Values between 40 and 60 percent are ideal.
- Check windows and window frames regularly: Condensation on window panes should be wiped off immediately to prevent mold growth.
What to do if mold has already formed?
If you discover mold despite all caution, act immediately. You can treat small areas yourself with special mold removers. In the event of extensive infestation or recurring mold, contact your property management company FOCUS Immobilien GmbH, as the cause may lie in the building fabric.
Good ventilation behavior is the key to preventing mould. With these simple measures, you not only protect your home, but also create a healthy indoor climate for you and your family.
